Article “Gates, Buffett Lobby the Rich for Donation Pledges” reports: Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates and billionaire investor Warren Buffett are launching a campaign to get other American billionaires to give at least half their wealth to charity.”

WATCHDOG: Many do that, and more.  Andrew Carnegie utilized his fortune during his life time and donated the balance upon his death to the Carnegie Foundation, setting an example for future generations.   John D. Rockefeller funded many important causes, including the development of modern medicine.

Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gate were interviewed by Charlie Rose on a program broadcast yesterday and today. (It will be available at www.CharlieRose.com in a day or two.)

Buffett made light of his parting with stock certificates held for decades, an act he emphasized would in no way impact his or his progeny’s life styles.

Ms. Gates acknowledged the great merit of philanthropy through modest donations of money and of personal efforts by persons of little or no means.  (Note: The only jewelry this gracious woman wore was a simple wedding ring.)

While some like Buffett donate funds to organizations in which they have confidence (in his case to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation), others like the Gates make aid and advocacy their primary occupation.

The Watchdog believes involvement multiplies effectiveness.
