EDITORIAL: How others now see us

For almost twenty years, the Watchdog has visited with Canadian in-laws each summer. There was a sense of mutual regard for the two nations.

Therefore it was a jolt this trip to find the USA the target for outspoken revilement and contempt for “greed, deceit, bullying, ignorance, profligacy and self indulgence” in large part over the world wide financial melt down.

Criticism of the USA from a dinner partner got so bad that the Watchdog finally blurted out that, unless the subject was changed, he was leaving the table.

The Watchdog is proud of our country’s accomplishments. But it is very difficult to defend the ignorance, rapacity and abuses of power that have occurred locally, statewide, and nationally over the past fifteen years. Alas, they have been ever so close at hand and so apparent to those who chose to look.
