World-renowned cellist performs with Lancaster protege

International concert artist, Emilio Colón wasn’t always living life in the spot light.  A native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Colón worked selling fruits and vegetables as a child in order to pay his way to study in the US.  He eventually saved enough money to come to the States where, at the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy, he was offered a full scholarship to attend the program.  From there he has become a world-class musician who now serves on the faculty of the legendary Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and tours the world performing concerts and spreading support for classical music. He will be in Lancaster to share his story with the inner city music students of Michael Jamanis, through a program sponsored by Music for Everyone at Washington Elementary.

In addition, Colon will be joined by cellist Sara Male of the Newstead Trio and Cara Miller, Ephrata High School graduate and doctoral candidate in cello performance at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.  They will perform works of J.S. Bach and David Popper at Grace Lutheran Church on Queen and James Streets in Lancaster on Sunday Dec. 5th at 3pm .  What makes this trio of cellists unique is the fact that while in high school, Miller was a student of Male and upon entering her Master’s degree at Indiana University became a student of Colón.

Miller will join her former mentors in a Requiem written for three cellos by  Popper, considered one of the most beautiful works written for the instrument.

The program will consist of:  Here’s the program:

J.S. Bach’s Suite 1, 2 and 3 for Unaccompanied Cello
Emilio Colón, solo cello

Polonaise in D minor, David Popper
Emilio Colón, cello
JuPing Song, piano

Requiem for Three Cellos, David Popper
Emilio Colón, Sara Male, Cara Miller, cellos

There is a suggested donation of $5.
