Top Senate Republican objects to governor linking funding in state budget

PITTSBURG POST-TRIBUNE: Gov. Tom Corbett on Wednesday will announce a “full privatization” plan to sell the state liquor stores, but fellow Republican leaders already are raising concerns with his plan to raise $1 billion for transportation, education or reducing state pension liabilities…

Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati, R-Jefferson County, told reporters he wants to look at “modernization” of the existing system and expressed concerns about access in rural areas if the state stores are sold.

House Speaker Sam Smith, R-Punxsutawney, said he believes the House might be interested in a hybrid plan that would not involve sale of the state system in one shot… (more)

WK: Looks like GOP leaders in the state legislators are starting to peel away from Corbett:

Scarnati, once again, said that’s not a priority for him, and he’s not sure it’s a good idea. Scarnati would rather modernize the current state store system than privatize it.

Scarnati also questions letting Camelot manage the Pennsylvania Lottery, which would expand gaming to the internet and keno games in bars and restaurants. He says lawmakers and casinos have legitimate gripes with how the deal’s going down.

“We think we have some legislative authority here,” Scarnati said. “And we have a commitment to the gaming industry that’s invested millions of dollars here.”
