“Star Trek” a solid ‘B’
By Dan Cohen, NewsLanc’s Santa Monica Reporter The new “Star Trek,” piloted by TV wunderkind J.J. Abrams, has already scored at the box office. Given that the cost has been estimated at around 150 million, this is a good thing for Paramount. It’s interesting that the initial turnout skewed older than most blockbusters; apparently 35 […]
COMMENTARY: ‘Teach For America’ may be what SD of L needs
Recently published studies indicate the School District of Lancaster is not making progress and perhaps is even falling behind in its endeavor to successfully educate its largely inner city, minority population. Perhaps it is time for Superintendant Pedro Rivera and the School Board to reach out to an organization named Teach For America, which has attractive much positive comment by educators and officials.

It’s a friendly place to find top-notch Southern-style soul food at a reasonable price. To say that it gives KFC a run for its money would be a serious understatement.

Need rises while funding shrinks for preventative care

Although the plan is requesting $14.7 million for ’10-’11, it is expected that the Mental Health/Mental Retardation (MH/MR) program will actually be receiving a cut from its current $12.7 million budget. This will be the organization’s first budget cut since 1991.

Less than 500 of the estimated 5,000 to 10,000 heroin addicts in Lancaster County can obtain relief from addiction, in large part because physicians are unwilling to treat them out of greed and indifference.
