SUNDAY NEWS

A column by Rabbi Jack Paskoff entitled “Faithful followers subvert injustice” relates in part:

“The things you learn from reading the newspaper! Two weeks ago, in this very newspaper, I discovered that my congregation, along with many other local organizations, was on a government watch list. My first reaction, as you might imagine, was outrage.

State Stores needs business management, not sale

A commendable Sunday News lead article “A last call for state stores?, Commonwealth needs cash to plug deficit.” This could be the year despite union, social objections” falls short because it quotes politicians and union representatives, but does not obtain opinions from experts in evaluating such transactions.

While we worry about US owning some of GM and Citibank

From “When China Rules the World” by Martin Jacques:

“…the Chinese state has always enjoyed a pivotal role in the economy and been universally accepted as the guardian and embodiment of society… the top 150 state-owned firms, far from being lame ducks, have instead become enormously profitable, the aggregate total of their profits $150 billion in 2007. ..The Chinese government has…exposed them to the fiercest competition both amongst themselves and with foreign firms.

Article “San Diego Drug Tunnel Had Railcar, Tons of Pot” reports: “ A sophisticated cross-border tunnel equipped with a rail system, ventilation and fluorescent lighting has been shut down by U.S. and Mexican officials – the second discovery of a major underground drug passage in San Diego this month, authorities said Friday.

Birth of a new global order

The following is excerpted from “When China Rules the World, The end of the Western World and the birth of a new global order” by Martin Jacques (Pgs. 144 / 145): “There is a deeply embedded sense of Western psychological superiority which draws on powerful economic, political, ideological, cultural and ethnic currents.

Unstoppable

Unstoppable is a 100 million dollar B movie. Its plot line, and every digression from the device that drives it, a runaway freight train loaded with hazardous chemicals, feels like it was cribbed from an undergraduate screenwriting text. There isn’t a single beat that isn’t telegraphed from miles down the track. And still, the movie is exciting.

Thanks to the givers among us

From USA TODAY: ….Though we don’t often see this philanthropy flowing through our nation in the news media, 89% of U.S. households donate. America is the most generous nation on the planet, making up nearly half of the world’s total giving. The average American is 14 times more generous than the average European, because Americans see philanthropy as their individual responsibility, not as a governmental activity, as most Europeans do.

EDITORIAL: Can we learn from Rome’s experience?

History students can sense “déjà vu all over again”, in the words of the great Yankee catcher and manager, Yogi Berra. The Watchdog senses that the USA started to decline around 1992 with the election of Democrat Bill Clinton by a minority with almost 19% of the public voting for Ross Perot of the “United We Stand” political party, a movement with much in common with today’s “Tea Party.”

LGH exempt from Sunshine Law

What are the laws governing these meetings? Are John Lines and LGH breaking the law? A quick google returned this excerpt: A 2003 publication from the Governor’s Center for Local Government Services entitled “Open Meetings/Open Records: The Sunshine Act and the Right to Know Law” notes:

How LGH security treats the media

The message on the display boards stated “Welcome, Lancaster General Hospital Board of Trustees, Thursday, November 18, 2010”

Some welcome. While NewsLanc’s Watchdog was seated and readying for the meeting, the LGH’s uniformed head of security came over and sternly asked if the Watchdog had a camera. The Watchdog respectfully responded that he had one in his briefcase. The security guard advised that photos were not allowed to be taken. The Watchdog said “Okay”.

LGH CHAIR’S ADDRESS AND NEWSLANC COMMENTS

The following is an effort to allow Alexander Henderson III, Chairperson, of Lancaster General Health to express his views in his own words. ‘[ ], ?, … and …’ indicate where our information is insufficient to assure accuracy. Occasionally interspersed are the Watchdog’s comments in UPPER CASE. We regret any errors or omissions below and welcome corrections or elaborations.

Five Questions for LGH’s Board of Trustees at Thursday’s public meeting

Editor’s note: NewsLanc’s publisher attended Thursday’s open meeting and was impressed with much that he heard. But representative of the sense of superiority and sheer arrogance of LGH was Chair Alex Henderson mentioning that Tom Beeman would only receive about half of the $1,200,000 gift that was reported in the Sunday News and repeated by NewsLanc, yet never corrected by representatives of LGH despite several contacts. We will report at length on line by this weekend and summarize in next week’s newsletters.
