SUNDAY NEWS

Headline under a photograph of college president Dan Porterfield tells it all:  “The ‘mindset to make a difference’; Students’ attitude inspires new Franklin & Marshall president, an academician, pragmatist and purveyor of ice cream.  The welcome mat is out; a new era for college begins.”

WATCHDOG: The trustees of the college, headed now by the local Dr. Lawrence Bonchek, implicitly spoke volumes concerning their rejection of the thuggish business means of former president John Fry by choosing the learned and high minded Porterfield.

As NewsLanc often opined, “Fry did the best possible things in the worst possible ways.” With Porterfield, F & M is returning to its past high standards of conduct and, we trust,  service to the Lancaster community.

The positive influence of Porterfield and Bonchek may redress the aggressive and self serving attitude that Fry, as a board member,  brought to Lancaster General Hospital.  With LGH president Tom Beeman returning  from Navy duty, we hope that he will turn his efforts to aligning LGH’s interest with the public health and educational needs of the community.

Beeman’s  first positive step would be to start face to face communication with critics.   In short, to be Tom Beeman, not John Fry!
