Philadelphia Daily News struggling to survive as an entity

According to tweets from Bob Fernandez, a source deemed reliable, Terry Egger, publisher of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News, says they will merge their newsrooms to save $5 million to $6 million per year.

To us at NewsLanc, this is further evidence of the disarray in the newsrooms at these newspapers and an explanation for the cheap shot a reporter for the Daily News took in turning over allegedly grand jury information that they attributed to Attorney General Kathleen Kane to a Montgomery County prosecutor.

The whole Kane so call scandal is a lot of noise over very little, leaking of grand jury information going on almost routinely by the Philadelphia media and others throughout the state.

Ineptitude by Kane if true, yes. Reason for forcing Kane from office? Nonsense.

If a single indiscretion by someone new in office calls for dismissal, few elected official would make it to their second year. Which leads to the question of what is the reason for these attacks?

Perhaps a media, long a handmaiden to an ‘old boys’ controlled state wide criminal justice system, rated among the the ten most corrupt states in the nation, is trying to protect their cozy and unprofessional relationship with those in power. And those in power, including some judges, fear an attorney general that isn’t beholden to them.

Now that is a more plausible hypothesis.

  1. Have a gut feeling the entire Kathleen Kane prosecution or should I say persecution is a hatchet job. The good old boys don’t want their transgressions aired for all to see. Don’t understand how they could strip her law license.

What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty

  2. With some of the garbage they are posting and calling ” news” ( like their false attacks on AG Kane), I’d say them going out of business would not be a bad thing.

  3. Current Witch hunt? I’ve been following this debacle and she is the witch in the middle of the room creating a volatile work environment of which defendants can appeal any cases against them. Not having a lawyer at the head of the office is a disgrace! She should temporarily step aside and let the office do its job!

  4. We have a presumption of innocence that is the hallmark of our justice system. A grand jury indictment means nothing. It is totally skewed toward the prosecution. A prosecutor with no skills at all could have gotten her indicted for the Manson murders. Also, once she stepped aside, it might be very difficult to come back once she’s proven innocent. I’ve been a lawyer for 23 years. I am certain of what I speak. As a criminal defense lawyer, I’ve long ago learned to trust my nose. It’s usually right and this case smells like 5 day old dead fish.
