Might Mitt Romney again be the Republican candidate for President?

By Robert Field

We suspect that one or two more mistakes such as Donald Trump calling for Federal Judge Judge Gonzalo Curiel to recuse himself from hearing a case against Trump because the judge is of Mexican heritage might trigger such a fire storm in the Republican Party establishment that serious planning may go into defeating his candidacy at the Republican Convention.

Republican candidates for offices high and low may well panic at the prospect of their candidate losing to Hillary Clinton by ten or more points. It would sweep in a Democrat Senate and possibly even the House.

Otherwise secure governors and state legislators would find themselves in mortal danger.

Donald Trump as a candidate might cause veteran Republcans to pine for the candidacy of Barry Goldwater.

Romney is a good port in this storm.  His nomination would turn the whole election on its head and he would have a very good chance of being elected.

Would arm-twisting of Trump delegates followed by putting Mitt Romney’s name into contention detract sufficient votes to prevent Trump from gaining a first round victory? If he doesn’t win then, his candidacy would likely be over.

The Donald better get his act under control. One or more slip may coalesce the Party leadership to dump him. And then anything can still happen.
