Merge ahead: DOT, ‘Pike

SCRANTON TIMES-LEADER Editorial: …Now, with several former turnpike executives and former Sen. Robert Mellow charged with rigging contract awards, the Legislature should use that latest round of alleged corruption as the catalyst for more efficient governance.

A bill sponsored by Rep. Donna Oberlander, a Clarion County Republican, would disband the commission and roll the turnpike operation into PennDOT, where it belongs.

The proposal is an opportunity to improve efficiency from the top down by eliminating redundant layers of administration. Although the turnpike charges tolls, it is simply a highway system.
