LETTER: Concerned for future of cinema

“It’s sad how simple minded people are becoming. I agree with the article [on “Terminator Salvation”] that it probably in large part is because if the difficult times that we live in.

“Terminator Salvation would have been a hit had it been released 10 years ago but now people just want things that go boom and make them laugh. They don’t want any depth or social commentary. Especially with Obama in office. He is a man of the times. He promises hope and change so people want that in their entertainment. They want to see that things will work out for the better in the future.

“They don’t want to see a future where humanity is fighting on the brink of extinction against an unstoppable enemy. It’s sad because I think this is the very reason why Watchmen also failed.

“Watchmen was probably the best movie of the year but its outlook was bleak and pessimistic. It sucks because my favorite movies are usually the darker ones. I like films that resonate and make you think. To me those are truly the real classics. Everything else is just kind of throw away entertainment.

“True, I wouldn’t call Terminator Salvation that deep of a movie but at least they do have some themes and messages that they throw in there. There is some social commentary. I feel like the new trend is really the death of high quality cinema.

“Now that both Watchmen and Terminator Salvation have bombed, studios are going to be afraid to take chances any more. They are just going to play it safe and make brainless family oriented entertainment.

“Man, I wish I could go back to the 80’s or the 90’s. Back when movies were taking real chances and were exciting both visually and intellectually. I’m concerned for the future of cinema.”
