Castille called it: Corbett’s decision to nominate judges isn’t fiscally sound

…The state’s top judge correctly predicted the political winds in Harrisburg. And he accurately anticipated the flurry of legislative deal-making that will cost the judiciary a lot of money.

A few weeks ago, [Ronald] Castille expressed concern when Gov. Tom Corbett nominated his former top aide, William Ward, to serve as an Allegheny County judge.
Castille had asked the governor not to fill some judicial vacancies as a cost-saving move. Castille wanted to wait to fill the empty seats until the next judicial cycle in 2013.

The chief justice said he was surprised at the governor’s move for a couple of reasons. He thought Corbett would honor his request, plus the governor hadn’t broached the possibility of nominating Ward previously. And Castille also noted Allegheny County’s caseload has dipped…
