LETTER: VA should be taking care of combat wounded, service related injured and then retired military
One of the GOP’s greatest wins would have to be in fooling much of the public into thinking that the Obama administration is responsible for the fiasco the VA is when in fact it was the Republican Congresses and Republican Presidents going back to Reagan that have underfunded the VA.
MILLER: Does history repeat?
In 1992, Bill Clinton defeated George H. W. Bush without winning a majority of the popular vote in the presidential campaign. Candidates with the same last name could repeat this happening in 2016.
Amtrak delays: It didn’t have to be this way
“We’re seeing two trends converging in an extraordinary way,” said Thomas Wright, president of the Regional Plan Association, a research and advocacy group. “Ridership is hitting all-time highs on the Northeast Corridor at the same time that the system is just too brittle and does not have the ability to withstand heat waves, storms and other incidents.”
Ohio Marijuana Monopoly Madness: ResponsibleOhio and Its Foes
by Phil Smith DRUG WAR CHRONICLE: Ohio may about to legalize marijuana, but not the way other states have done it. In addition to millions of dollars in campaign contributions, the companies have deployed battalions of lobbyists…
Ironically Trump may yet be the savior of the Republican Party
His investors and creditors have been burnt again and again. His ‘daddy’ put him in business and bailed him out time and again. (Famously by purchasing $20 million in gambling chips at one of Trump’s hotels. Chips have first claim on assets, before all other debt.)
VA has 41,500 unfilled medical jobs, forcing vets into costly private care
USA TODAY: …The failure to fully staff hospitals is one reason why the Department of Veterans Affairs paid for 1.5 million veterans to see doctors outside the agency in the past year, VA Deputy Secretary Sloan Gibson testified late last month. LNP editorial defends free speech at public meetings. Better late than never.
We don’t mean to blame the current editorial board for the sins and silences of its predecessors, but our salient memories are of three times when LNP has remained silent (if not conspiratorial) when similar issues were involved:
Democrats Score Sought-After Senate Candidate in Pennsylvania
McGinty’s entrance would be a major victory for Democrats in Washington, who have scoured Pennsylvania looking for a top-tier candidate in what should be a politically-crucial Senate battleground in 2016.
New York Plans $15-an-Hour Minimum Wage for Fast Food Workers
NEW YORK TIMES: The labor protest movement that fast-food workers in New York City began nearly three years ago has led to higher wages for workers all across the country. On Wednesday, it paid off for the people who started it. A panel appointed by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo recommended on Wednesday that the minimum […]
“If our beds are filled, it means we have failed”
“Mount Sinai’s number one mission is to keep people out of the hospital. We’re focused on population health management as opposed to the traditional fee-for-service medicine. So instead of receiving care that’s isolated and intermittent, patients receive care that’s continuous and coordinated, much of it outside of the traditional hospital setting.”
