Further signs of U. S. economic recovery

From BLOOMBERG: The strengthening U.S. economy, subdued inflation and rising stock prices are propelling the dollar rally into its fifth month as traders seek refuge from Europe’s fiscal crisis and Japanese deflation… A year after correctly predicting the currency’s decline and likening it to the fall of Rome, Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc’s Alan Ruskin said it may soar 22 percent to $1.10 per euro if Greece defaults.

Effects of a convention on downtown business

There are reports on Lancaster Online’s TalkBack that businesses in the 300 block of North Queen Street suffered a noticeable loss of business during the recent quilt convention.  A theory is that locals stayed away to avoid heavy downtown traffic, and visitors spent all of their time in or near the convention center.

China’s Geely to Buy Volvo From Ford for $1.8 Billion

Allawi coalition has narrow win in Iraqi poll

FINANCIAL TIMES: A secular coalition led by Iyad Allawi narrowly won the most seats in this month’s Iraq parliamentary elections, according to results released Friday night. The announcement has set the stage for the potentially rare dismissal of an Arab leader at the polls.

The results mark a remarkable turnaround for Mr Allawi, who served as prime minister in 2004 in the wake of the US-led war to oust Saddam Hussein, and a blow to Nouri -al-Maliki, the current prime minister.
