Why do we permit generals to testify before Congress in uniform?

EDITOR: We have been misinformed again and again by the generals in charge of wars in Viet Nam, Iraq and Afghanistan. Note the videos accompanying the following article. In watching the PBS News Hour, the Watchdog found his attention focused on the four stars on Gen. Allen’s jacket and shirt.

These officers use their uniforms to mask their deceptions. Congress members may know better, but appearing in mufti is an effort to bedazzle and often as not to delude the public.

Roman generals had to leave their legions behind when they came to Rome. Let’s make our generals leave their uniforms at home and present themselves in civilian clothes as do every other official and authority. Then the public will be better able to judge whether they speak the truth or are the ‘macho’ and unwitting pawns of the military- industrial complex.

Gen. Allen urges analysis before further troop reductions

The top coalition commander in Afghanistan said he plans to analyze security conditions after the last of the surge forces leave this fall before making a recommendation on further troop reductions.

“It’s going to require some analysis after the conclusion of the fighting season” and the reduction of forces, Marine Gen. John Allen testified Tuesday before the House Armed Services Committee.

The military is reducing the size of the U.S. force in Afghanistan to pre-surge levels by October, which would leave 68,000 U.S. service members…
