Who are the winners and losers in the PSU/NCAA settlement?

WINNER: …State Treasurer Rob McCord and Senate Majority Leader Jake Corman: The Montgomery County Democrat and the senator from Penn State won plaudits from the Paterno family Friday for what they termed their “tenacious efforts” to right “a large measure” of the wrong perpetrated against the late Joe Paterno and the university.

LOSER: Mark Emmert and the NCAA: What few teeth the NCAA had left have effectively been pulled with news of the settlement agreement. The athletic governing body can now return to its seemingly full-time occupation of defending itself against criticism that it helps large universities exploit athletes’ talent for little or no recompense in return…

LOSER: Gov. Tom Corbett: The Republican lost re-election in November in no small part because of the belief that he railroaded Paterno andPenn State. A later admission that the university was perhaps too hasty in its decision to fire the coach didn’t help either. We await relevant information as testimony from the recent law suits is made public and from the forthcoming trials of Penn State officials… if they indeed ever take place.
