Where the disputes lie in the ongoing state university faculty contract talks

HARRISBURG PATRIOT-NEWS:  There’s some compromises that have yet to be found to resolve the differences that exist in the bargaining positions of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties, which represents the interests of more than 5,000 professors, and the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

Salary increases aren’t one of them. Both sides have agreed to changes in their base compensation package that essentially mirror the increases granted to the system’s other bargaining units, including the one with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 13. Those agreements provided a pay freeze the first year and across-the-board raises in amounts up to 2 percent in each of the final three years.

 Faculty members now are paid salaries that range between $44,795 and $107,870 a year. Their benefits package costs, on average, 25 percent of their salary, although it can be higher if they take advantage of the system’s policy that waives all or half of a dependent’s tuition, depending on which university the dependent attends…  (more)
