US farm bill failure signals Congressional gridlock

FINANCIAL TIMES: The Republican leadership in the US House of Representatives suffered a crushing defeat on a $940bn bill funding farm support and food aid in a vote that bodes ill for coming showdowns over the budget and immigration reform.

The farm bill has been traditionally passed by Congress every five years to fund everything from crop support and insurance for farmers to food stamps, which subsidise the housekeeping bills of the unemployed and low-paid.

The bill was defeated by 234 votes to 195 after 62 members of the Republican majority in the House bucked their leadership and cast ballots against it… (more)
