The ‘they’ who fired Joe Paterno

SCRANTON TIMES-TRIBUNE EDITORIAL: …Reflecting on the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal, its effect on Penn State University and its football program and a series of events since that have altered the landscape, Mr. Corbett told The Philadelphia Inquirer last week, regarding the late Joe Paterno: “They probably shouldn’t have fired him … he probably should have been given the last three games, not on the sideline.”

The “they,” however, includes Mr. Corbett, who, as governor, was and is a member of the PSU board of trustees. He was less than a year into his term when the board fired Mr. Paterno in November 2011, but had not participated in any board meetings. Leading to the meeting at which the decision was made to fire the coach, Mr. Corbett repeatedly demanded that the board take “decisive action” and later supported its decision to fire Mr. Paterno…

Last week, internal NCAA emails, which were released as part of a lawsuit, revealed that top NCAA officials knew that there was no authority for the organization to impose draconian sanctions against the Penn State football program, but that they believed they could get the panicky PSU board to agree to them.… (more)
