The fix is in: PA Republicans would reap the benefit of saying no to voters

New laws that make it harder for people to vote — like insisting on photo ID at the polls — have been fairly criticized as being solutions to no documented problem. But with the laws overwhelmingly sponsored by Republicans, conservatives apparently see a problem — that too many people in constituencies favorable to Democrats are voting.

Nobody will admit that, of course; conservative lawmakers insist their motives are a high-minded concern for the integrity of the electoral system.

But the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University issued a report Oct. 3 that said 19 laws and two executive actions approved in 14 states this year, plus 100 bills, discourage voting in various ways. Among them are insisting on photo ID, which poor people, the elderly, students or minorities are far more likely not to have. Some 34 states, including Pennsylvania, introduced such legislation. The state House has passed it, but not yet the Senate; Gov. Tom Corbett supports it…
