The child abuse report is finally out and our lawmakers must now act to strengthen state’s laws

HARRISBURG PATRIOT-NEWS Editorial:  …It’s shocking anyone even needed to say “Put children first, Pennsylvania.” But after the Keystone State has been in the national spotlight for the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse tragedy, the Philadelphia priest child sex abuse and cover-up scheme and the “kids for cash” judicial ploy in Luzerne County, it’s clear the system failed…

Child advocates and physicians for years have complained that Pennsylvania’s definition is too broad and allows too many children to fall through the cracks…

At the moment, there has to be proof of “serious bodily injury.” That term can mean a lot of different things to different people. A move as simple as lowering the threshold to “bodily injury” will make it easier to catch abusers sooner. The same can be said for what constitutes sexual abuse…  (more)
