State officials defend snow day with pay

…Rendell administration officials said a management directive requires employees to be paid if a state office is closed, as was the case at all five state office buildings on Wednesday. Additionally, state employees who work in the Capitol Complex got a two-hour delayed opening on Thursday

“When employees are unable to come to work as a public safety issue, then it’s appropriate that they not lose a day’s pay for that,” said Rendell press secretary Gary Tuma…

By closing state government offices across the state because of the wintry conditions, he allowed 50,000 so-called “nonessential” employees to take a paid day off.
