Senate race challenges Pennsylvania’s history as a moderate state, experts say

PATRIOT-NEWS:  U.S. Senate Democratic nominee Joe Sestak supports gay marriage, embryonic stem cell research and abortion.
    
     Republican opponent Pat Toomey opposes embryonic stem cell research, and during his legislative tenure, the former Lehigh Valley congressman supported a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage and a ban on partial-birth abortion.
    
    Two years ago, these divisive issues would have polarized the electorate. This time around, they scarcely register on the political radar…
        
    “For the bulk of voters, the economy really overwhelms everything else,” said Steven Peterson, professor of politics and public affairs at Penn State Harrisburg. “For many voters, if this were a regular campaign, social issues might be important.
