SD of L reduces time off

For reasons that may have been good but have inconvenienced many parents and shortened the class time for students, the School District of Lancaster has lately held half-day sessions of school on two Wednesdays each month.  Thus it was with relief on the parts of many parents and likely dejection by almost all students that the policy is being changed to only a single half-day session a month.

Below is an excerpt from the message:

“Based on conversations with staff, parents, students and community members, the district reevaluated the early release time on Wednesdays. We decided to implement a schedule that allows for:

  • Increased instructional time for students
  • Reduced need for families to find childcare for young children
  • Less unchaperoned release time for older students
  • Larger blocks of time for professional development

As a result, the district will schedule early release time ONLY on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, instead of continuing with the current schedule. On the 2nd Wednesday, secondary students will be released after lunch at noon, and elementary students will be released at 12:30 p.m. All other Wednesdays will follow a regular dismissal schedule unless noted in the District calendar. Please make note of this change for next school year.”
