Rendell to push for appointing, not electing, Pennsylvania’s judges

Gov. Ed Rendell will devote some time this week to pushing for merit selection of state appellate court judges, an item on his second-term agenda.

Mr. Rendell is scheduling a press conference Wednesday to discuss ending the current system of electing statewide judges and replacing it with merit selection, said spokesman Gary Tuma on Monday.

The governor had advocated merit selection as a way to remove the excessive influence of campaign contributions in filling the state courts at recent appearances in Scranton…
