Quilt Show test of Convention Center location

It is Sunday, March 21 at 8:47 am and Vine Street in downtown Lancaster is choked shut! An 18 wheeler, the kind many have said would be needed to support our new convention center and could not due to the poor planning and lack of space is wedged between the center’s structure and a car parked on Vine St. and cannot gain access to the rear of the CC.

In what many believe will be one of the worst traffic weeks in the history of downtown Lancaster, it is move-in day for the American Quilters’ Society annual show, which has moved from the Lancaster Host to the downtown CC. Is this a harbinger of things to come this week and into the future?

  1. Unfortunately for the Convention Center, I don’t believe many groups with large trucks will engage the center after looking at the inadequate load in and load out.

I’d be curious to know the offer that AQS could not refuse that was used by the CC to assure hosting the show.

Well, we’ll just have to keep watching!!

  2. We told them so…

  3. Somehow I am not surprised….it will be really interesting to see what kind of ‘repeat business’ the Convention Center can attract!!

  4. Victor Capeece warned of this years and years ago!

  5. I think for the most part this show is mom and pop vendors with Uhaul trailers. My guess is that this TT was an anomaly for AQS. That said, it seems pretty funny that it was wedged in there. I wonder how soon the parking on Vine Street will go away. Too bad for the residents.

  6. If you look at the truck in picture it is a sleeper cab which is longer than a regular cab and thus would have more difficulty backing-up. Also the convention center could easily have a jockey-truck available. This would require them to probably rent the truck to the driver (CDL class A). Just some simple communication and co-operation, or in other words, don’t consider asking any politicians for help!

  7. My Mother and I attended the quilt show. We did not enjoy ourselves. We felt that everything was jammed into a small area. We could not move around, we were bumping into to someone all the time. We could not see what the vendors had for sale. We had to find parking 3 or 4 blocks away. Plus when I got my parking ticket validated I had to pay $4 more for attending show ( a total of $7). We will not be back again.
