Proposal to help the mentally ill

From the YORK DAILY RECORD:

…People suffering from mental illness are no different than a person who breaks a leg – with one large exception. In many cases of the most severe mental illnesses, the person does not know he or she is sick or that treatment is needed. The disorder is called anosognosia.

For these people, a broken leg feels normal. They see no need for treatment.

And that’s the dilemma faced by professionals who deal with people with severe mental illness every day. How do they compel people to seek treatment if the person doesn’t acknowledge the disease? …

  1. I’m experiencing this very same issue trying to help my mother.

    It is disheartening because the rules and regulations that are in place state they have to willingly come and seek help. However if the person doesn’t know or feel they need help what can you do. Before officials step in they have to threaten to hurt or harm themselves or someone else.

    I’m desperately seeking answers.
