Pennsylvania’s newer bridges aren’t always better, PennDOT ratings show

“There’s a bridge in the Philadelphia area built in 1697. It was commissioned by William Penn. It’s had some follow-up work since but no major structural repair in more than a century. And it carries nearly 16,000 vehicles each day.

“Then there’s the George N. Wade Memorial Bridge, which carries Interstate 81 over the Susquehanna River north of Harrisburg. Built in 1973, it’s considered structurally deficient and is the subject of an ongoing $36 million repair effort. …

Earlier work on the bridge was to retrofit it for safety after the Mianus River Bridge collapsed in Connecticut. All pin and hanger bridges were retrofitted to add backup safety systems, Penny said. Those bridges also require regular maintenance….”
