Pennsylvania should scrap voter ID law, start over

LEHIGH VALLEY EXPRESS TIMES Editorial:  …We’re tired of arguing the motive for this bad law. Suffice it to say that Republican lawmakers who passed it are sticking to their rationale of battling in-person voter fraud — while issues such as transportation funding, public employee pension reform and child-abuse prevention remain on the shelf.

The voter ID controversy isn’t going away. Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson Jr. — who blocked the ID requirement in the November election because the state couldn’t handle the demand for new cards — plans to preside over a trial on the law’s constitutionality next summer. However that decision goes, either the state or the ACLU-supported plaintiff is likely to appeal to the state Supreme Court.

The Legislature could make this a moot point — by repealing the law and taking up a bipartisan debate on real voting reform, as New Jersey is doing…  (more)
