Patriot-News merging with Pennlive, reducing print edition to three days a week

From the HARRISBURG PATRIOT-NEWS:

…Under the new company, The Patriot-News will change its print schedule to three days a week beginning in January 2013. At the same time, the organization will intensify its online and digital news-gathering efforts 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The newspaper will continue to publish on Sundays. The other two days of publication will be determined after gathering input from readers and advertisers…

But such innovations couldn’t halt the industry-wide decline in newspaper circulation that began to quicken in recent years. In 1992, 176,000 copies of The Sunday Patriot-News were sold each week. By 2002, that number had fallen to 155,000. Circulation today stands at 118,000. The daily paper witnessed similar declines and the reduction in revenue forced a series of voluntary employee buyouts, cost cutting and furloughs in recent years.

  1. Only a matter of time in Lancaster. No loss there. 90% of LNP daily paper comes from the AP. That is no exaggeration. Sunday News has more local stories, but the rest of the week it’s 90% wire.
