Pass just tax

State Senate Republicans broke a promise to Pennsylvania taxpayers last year when they failed to enact a tax on natural gas extraction.

That caucus was among the chorus of lawmakers that crowed about passing a state budget by the July 1 statutory deadline for the first time in eight years. But the budget was contingent upon adoption of a the natural gas tax by Oct. 1. The House dutifully kept its promise by passing the tax on time, but Senate Republicans reneged, letting the tax bill expire without action.

Since then, new Gov. Tom Corbett adamantly has refused to impose the tax, allowing the burgeoning industry to send more of its money to Houston, Oklahoma City, Little Rock and Baton Rouge – their headquarters cities – rather than to Harrisburg…
