Ohio Gov. Kasich: Pay Doctors for Results, Not Workload

From NEWSMAX:

Doctors should be rewarded for their results and not by the number of people they treat, Ohio Gov. John Kasich tells Newsmax.TV.

“How many people can you get through the door is not the way we ought to be doing it,” Kasich said during the exclusive interview. “We ought to be paying people on the basis of the fact that you get better outcomes if people are healthier….

“We also know that a relatively small portion of the population, 4 or 5 percent, drives over 50 percent of the cost. So if you focus on them, instead of their getting their primary care in the emergency room and you get them in the right setting, you not only get a healthier person but you also save a lot of money. So it’s just thinking differently.”

EDITOR: It is very heartening to hear a conservative Republic governor espousing a key element of Obamacare.  The Geisinger health care system is an example of what Kasich is recommending.   A physician is judged by statistics aggregating all of his or her patients.  Emphasis is shifted from treating maladies to preventing them.

In Geisinger’s case, they are both an insurance company and hospital operator, so they have a financial incentive for a holistic approach to public health.

Lancaster General Health  is only a provider of health care and this helps explain its insensitivity to preventing spread of HIV / AIDS and other social diseases  and to help get Lancaster’s over 5000 heroin addicts back to family and work through a syringe exchange.
