“Obama Suffers devastating Loss in Massachusetts Senate Upset” reports:

“In one of the most shocking turnabouts in modern political history, GOP underdog Scott Brown has single-handedly captured the so-called ‘Kennedy seat’ in Massachusetts, wiped out the Democratic supermajority in Congress, and pushed the president’s Obamacare agenda to the very brink of a stunning defeat.

“David Gergen, former presidential adviser, on CNN:  ‘This will be the vote heard ’round the world. It’s going to have an enormous impact on Washington. I think it will have ripple effects even in American foreign policy. …This was also a message to Washington. The people of Massachusetts, the bluest of blue states, do not like the direction Washington is taking.’’”

WATCHDOG: Can’t growl, can’t wag his tail. Just stupefied!

He suspects that failure of proposed health reform to adopt significant cost cutting measures was a big factor in Massachusetts, the lone state in the country to have adopted a Single Payer health care system.

If so, this is as much a rejection of Republican support of the health care status quo as distaste for liberal reform.  Certainly it was a vindication of Republican strategy to attack deficit spending.

It also reflects the lack of public understanding of the need for deficit spending to revive the economy. The Watchdog‘s estimate of the likelihood of a potential depression was 10% a year ago, 20% last week. Now it rises to 25%
