By imposing sanctions against Penn State University, the NCAA has expanded beyond the scope of its mission. There was not a single violation of a football regulation. The alleged failures of Penn State listed by the NCAA are all nebulous failures concerning “institutional integrity,” “fundamental notions of individual integrity” and “appropriate and responsible conduct.” None of these was tied specifically to anything to do with the game of football or athletics in general.
The failure at Penn State had to do with violations of criminal law, already being ably handled by state and local authorities. The main perpetrator sits in jail awaiting sentencing. Two administrators are being prosecuted. The president and legendary head coach were fired.
Yet for some unexplained reason, officials at the NCAA felt that they had the power and duty to inflict more punishment. Now whoever gave the NCAA that kind of authority?
