Mourn the death of seven children, but also place responsibility

NEW YORK TIMES: Jerusalem Mourns 7 Brief Lives Lost in Brooklyn Fire

“ ‘Here before you are seven innocents, seven innocent lambs,’ Gabriel Sassoon intoned, eulogizing seven of his children before their burial here on Monday, two days after they died in a blaze during the Jewish Sabbath in their home in Midwood, Brooklyn.”

The seven children were indeed innocent, but Sassoon was ‘guilty’ for failing to place smoke detectors in the kitchen and above the stairs and, if he or his wife were smokers, in their bedroom.

The deaths were totally preventable. This adds to the tragedy.

  1. Just like Lancaster City – if you rent you’re legally protected by smoke detectors; if you own your home, you’re welcome to die in a fire.
