160 families in Jasz, Hungary receive bread and milk aid.
Index.hu: American House Foundation and the Hungarian Red Cross to distribute bread and milk to poor families in the Jász region.
The American House Foundation (www.amerikaihazalapitvany.hu) and the Hungarian Red Cross (www.magyarvoroskereszt.hu) signed an agreement yesterday that provides for one kilo of bread and two liters of milk to be distributed daily to 160 poor families in nine towns and villages in the Jász region between April 20th and December 31st of this year.
The program is being financed by the American House Foundation and managed by the Hungarian Red Cross in collaboration with 9 local governments (Jászberény, Jászjákóhalma, Jászkisér, Jászladány, Jászalsószentgyörgy, Jánoshida, Jászboldogháza, Alattyán, Jásztelek) at an estimated cost of EUR 10,000 a month. The American House Foundation has contracted with a local bakery and a local dairy to supply 160 kg of bread and 320 liters of 2.8% milk every day for distribution to poor families with two or more children.
According to Eric Selymes, of all the European Union districts, Jász is the second poorest. While the Hungarian Red Cross has been active in this region for many years, this is the first program to provide basic foodstuffs to poor families on a daily basis.
According to Richard Field, McCaskey class of 1984, this is a prototype program, one American House foundation hopes to be able to expand and replicate elsewhere with the participation of other companies and foundations active in Hungary.
This sounds like a terrific program. Kudos to both organizations for truly doing something worthwhile. The item also shows that even modest efforts (160 families fed for part of a year) are logistically and operationally complicated and expensive. I don’t know Richard Field well, but I am aware of his work in Hungary, and it is very impressive.
