Many jobless in U.S. don’t collect unemployment

USA TODAY:  About 2 million jobless Americans fear they’ll lose their extended unemployment benefits, which are slated to end next month unless Congress votes to renew them.

Their concerns make a new finding all the more puzzling: Many people eligible for unemployment don’t even bother to collect it.

  1. My wife was often unemployed and did not apply for benefits. It was self restraint on our part. We were making it without going on the dole. We got through it and kept our self respect. If you can’t do without it take it, otherwise do the right thing.

    EDITOR: Unemployment compensation is a pooling of savings to create insurance for the unemployed, not a dole. This is not meant to detract from the commendable action.
