LNP editorial stance re liquor law reform flies in face of experience

Editorial “New Pennsylvania liquor law is progress, but not enough” opens as follows:

“Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf on Wednesday signed into law a bill that would expand liquor sales in the commonwealth. State House members voted 157 to 31 to approve the bill. The only local lawmaker who voted against it was state Rep. Mark Gillen, who represents portions of northern Lancaster and southern Berks counties. The new law, among other things, will allow wine sales in grocery stores. However, the law stops well short of privatizing Pennsylvania’s archaic liquor system.”

Residents of Manhattan would welcome a Pennsylvania State Store in place of the variety of liquor and wine stores with limited inventory, much higher prices, mediocre selections (Try to find your favorite California wines), and generally inferior service.

We think it is okay that shoppers for dinner can pick up a bottle of wine without having to make a special trip to a State Store. But for at least a decade, we have been well served at State Stores.

‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’
