License to watch: Vehicle-tracking cameras must not be abused

From the PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETETE Editorial:

…The cameras will be of assistance to law enforcement officers, who told the Post-Gazette’s Moriah Balingit they believe they will help in solving crimes, tracking down suspects, apprehending child abductors and fill in the gaps when eyewitnesses can provide only a partial license number.

Catching bad guys is a safety improvement that benefits everyone, and people should know by now that there is no legal expectation of privacy for conduct that takes place in plain sight on public streets. But that doesn’t mean the power of the cameras should be abused, which is why the American Civil Liberties Union has stepped in.

The organization is asking the right questions about how such information will be used, how long it will be retained and who will have access to it. The ACLU of Pennsylvania sent requests for data to more than a dozen local police departments in conjunction with a national effort in 38 states…
