LGH: First they say they will, they don’t, then they won’t

(To Tom Beeman, President, Lancaster General Health from Robert Field, Publisher of NewsLanc.com)

10/29/’14

Tom:

I would be pleased to meet with you or another top executive to discuss the U of P Health System proposal. Once having the proper assurances and knowing more about benefits and savings, we may well support the combination, as we did with the Martin Plan for the Convention Center and recent format changes by LNP.

My concern is a slippery slope that might put Lancaster’s remaining jewel in U of P’s pocket.

Kind wishes.

Robert

Robert,

Tom Beeman asked that I respond to your request for a meeting about our discussions with the University of Pennsylvania Health System regarding possible consolidation.

Our announcement last week was merely a notice to our community that discussions were about to begin with UPHS. We are on the very front end of discussions which ideally will answer many of the questions you raise. We understand the public’s interest, and we have received both requests from you and other media outlets for additional comment and interviews. As we considered these, we concluded that we had provided all of the information currently available; there are no additional details to provide. We have released everything we know and discussions will begin with UPHS shortly. It would be premature at this time to meet and speculate on what the discussions with UPHS will produce.

Attached is the media release announcing our discussions with UPHS, and is available via our website. As discussions with UPHS continue over the next several months, and more details become known, we will publicly announce them.

Sincerely,

John

EDITOR: This is not the first of such exchanges between Field and Beeman over the years.

Beeman seems to want to do the right thing but is contravened by others, perhaps Executive Vice President Jan Bergen who on both occasions was copied with his responses.

This has caused us to wonder who is the de facto CEO at LGH.
