[Concerning “Rendall seeks greater help for the mentally retarded“], this is sad because it is far from the truth. There are proposed 17.3 million in cuts to community services. 700 plus students leave education each year, serving only 100 leaves 500 or 600 added to the waiting list of already 18,000 waiting for services. That’s right 18,000 are already sitting at home with NO services!
Pennsylvania is failing in meeting the needs of people with disabilities and is getting worse. These smoke screens to make it appear that there are budget increases and people are getting their needs met are truly sad. Ask families whose children are nearing 21, they are terrified that their children will sit home with nothing and regress and lose skills. Parents or family members must leave work to provide care and assistance. The only option is to be forced into a costly undesirable institutional placement if a family can not provide the support.
This is destroying hopes and dreams of individuals, placing hardships on families and communities. Costing taxpayers tremendously as years of Early Intervention and special education are wasted and individual sit at home doing nothing,
