Lawmakers shouldn’t lose sight of consumers in liquor debate

HARRISBURG PATRIOT-NEWS Editorial:  …It is long past time that the state’s Prohibition-era relic should be retired despite the great strides the Liquor Control Board has made to modernize its operation.

We commend the Governor and the legislature for finally making progress on giving Pennsylvanians a consumer friendly system of selling beer and wine. On Thursday, the House voted 105-90 to send the bill to the Senate.

The legislation, in its current form, unfortunately sets up an uneven playing field between beer distributors – who have historically opposed privatization – and grocery stores. It also impedes the consumer choice that advocates say a privatized system would provide…  (more)
