Lancaster Public Library grossly under compensated from state funding

An article in the Lancaster Intelligencer titled “Lancaster Public Library reaches out to community with fundraising push” reports:

“Under the current formula, LPL gets 28 percent of the county’s portion — but serves 40 percent of the county population, according to its executive director, Herb Landau.

“[Executive Director Herb] Landau noted that some member libraries get more than $8 per capita, while LPL gets $1.83. The problem is so severe, Landau recently announced that he’s exploring options in Harrisburg to sever ties with the county system and go it alone.

“Representatives of LPL and the system are scheduled to meet Friday with state librarian Stacey Aldrich to discuss alternatives.”

It is good that the local press is taking note of the growing controversy, even if the news of real importance is obscured by the head line and only appears in the lower half of the article.

To make matters even less fair, the bloated and under performing Library System is contemplating fund raising on its own and thus competing with the independent libraries.
