LANCASTER NEW ERA

Editorial “’In God We Trust,’ indeed” goes on to say:

“…a persuasive case could be made that the motto’s use has more to do with the nation’s rich religious history than any attempt to establish a state church. Adding the words ‘In God We Trust’ to public school buildings serves to honor the national motto while affirming Pennsylvania’s role in that history.”

WATCHDOG: We would take a firm position in the matter if we all had a similar concept of what is meant by God. For many, God is a historic figure. To others, God is a metaphor for lofty values taught by our traditions and our current highest societal aspirations.

Since there is no attempt to define what is meant by God, we side with the editors. But if added were “our Lord Jesus Christ”, “whose prophet was Mohammad”, or “the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob”, we would object and we suspect so would they. For which we award them a wag of the tail.
