Israeli jets hit Syrian target near border

FINANCIAL TIMES:  Israel conducted an overnight air strike near the Syria-Lebanon border, regional and US sources said on Wednesday, in a fresh indication of the potential regional spillover from Syria’s civil war.

The target appeared to have been a convoy of SA-17 anti-aircraft missiles, according to western officials and regional counterparts cited by news agencies. Israeli military analysts said that Benjamin Netanyahu’s government had become increasingly concerned in recent days by the movement of Syrian SA-17 batteries towards Lebanon…

According to the Israeli analysts, Syria’s government may have wanted to transfer the Russian-made SA-17s to Hizbollah in order to remove any possibility that they could be taken over by rebel fighters seeking to topple Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Hizbollah did not comment…  (more)
