Intell – New Era now striking proper journalistic balance

A few years ago Lancaster Newspapers, Inc. decided to jettison most reporting of state and national news and concentrate on local events and human interest stories. The Intelligencer Journal New Era became almost totally parochial. The Lancaster Sunday News wasn’t much better.

NewsLanc’s state and national coverage was usually a day to a day and a half ahead of the local newspapers, half a day ahead of LancasterOnLine, and often carried far more articles about Pennsylvania.

Over the past few days, the Lancaster Newspapers has corrected the situation. Although the front page still features mostly matters of local interest, pages two and three are full of state and national news. Moreover, there no longer is a delay in the coverage.

We surmised they are utilizing the same state wire service that we do, or one quite similar.

We tip our hat to them for this major improvement. Yes, most people prefer to read about their own community. But others are interested in national and world developments. Not everybody can afford the time or money to also subscribe to the New York Times or the Philadelphia Inquirer.

As for NewsLanc, we will seek out articles that expand upon typical news coverage and we will continue to be the wise and courageous critic of all that is wrong in our community. There is more than enough of both to keep us busy and the web site interesting.
