Home sprinklers now mandated

Observer-Reporter:  In 1999, Pennsylvania replaced myriad local building standards with a statewide building code based on the Uniform Construction Code. In 2009, Pennsylvania became the first state to comply with the updated international code requiring sprinkler systems in single-family homes.

The state builders’ group maintains that sprinkler systems will cost homeowners from $3,000 to $15,000, depending on the size of their house. It also points out that costs might be more in rural areas without public water lines and where wells might not be able to produce enough water or pressure for the systems.

Although sprinklers should be required for apartment buildings, hotels and other public buildings, we believe installing systems in private houses ought to be the decision of the homeowner, not the government…   (more)
