Gil Smart bids farewell and heads for the beach

LANCASTERONLINE OP-ED: …Turns out, at the increasingly creaky and cranky old age of 48, I can live in a tropical place, doing exactly what I want to do. Because as I noted in my farewell column, when I went into journalism, all I wanted to do was be a columnist; I wanted to be Mike Royko. And I was a columnist, I did it for years. But I never had a chance to be just a columnist. And the newspaper business being what it is these days, I figured that ship had sailed.

Turns out, it hadn’t. Turns out, there are still papers, media companies, that really value local columnists, writers who are an identifiable face and voice in the community, someone who generates a following, who generates heat, who generates interest. And I know how to be that guy.

Now I get to be that guy, again – full time, even… (more)

EDITOR: In addition to Smart, LNP has recently lost Cindy Stauffer and Brett Hambright, two of its best and most prolific producers. We can only imagine how low morale must be at 8 W. King Street.

We are happy for Gil and wish him well. But Lancaster and especially LNP are poorer for his departure.

  1. One would think that LNP management would acknowledge the loss/retirement/departure of good employees. An employee-friendly, reader-friendly, advertiser-friendly newspaper would do so, if for no other reason than good will.

Says a lot about current ownership/management at LNP (LousyNewsPaper, as some have called it).

Happy Thanksgiving to NewsLanc and all it’s readers

  2. How much longer until LNP (Lousy News Paper) is gone too?

EDITOR: We don’t consider LNP a “lousy newspaper.” But we do think the way the owners are using it to feather their own Marriott Hotel nest and those of their cronies “lousy.”

  3. You’ll always have a friend in PA! We will miss the Smart Family. We will treasure the fun times! Best of Luck!

  4. Good luck in your new adventure. Are you open to house guests ??
