The above photo was taken in the back yard of a home within a couple hundred yards of Wheatland in the staid School Lane Hills neighborhood just west of the city which is largely inhabited by prominent physicians.
Over the years, neighbors were likely to have had lone sightings, usually a blur, of a mature fox racing for cover. One asks oneself “Was that too red to have been a dog?”
Should residents be fearful… or grateful? The foxes cut down on the over population of squirrels which, due to laws protecting them, have become so great as to infest eves and attics and present a fire threat.
The rabbit population seems a lot less this year. Thus vegetable plots should be bountiful and, for a change, end up for human consumption.
However, it may be a good idea to keep the cat in at night.
When made aware of the fox family photo by NewsLanc, Lancaster Township Manager Bill Laudien’s first reaction was “Wow” followed by “I’m contacting the Pa Game Commission’s Southeast Regional office to get answers and guidance.”
The red fox visits us regularly, from what I hear he and his family have a whole near the creek on River Rd. I understand that they like to hunt the baby rabbits at this time of the year.
He came within a few yards of my cat one day, luckily my cat was aware of him and ready to head up a tree. He didn’t seem to care much about the cat.
