Flood policies should be mandatory

Political responses to flooding are like the weather itself – nobody actually does anything about it.

A group of lawmakers from Northeast Pennsylvania plan to introduce a series of bills that would provide “bridge” funding to help fund repairs from flood damage, while calling on Washington to expedite full funding.

The relief is needed and the bills are fine as far as they go. But the lawmakers, like generations of their predecessors, haven’t addressed fundamental reforms that are needed to ensure that flood damages are covered. They have not made flood insurance mandatory for properties in known flood zones. Thus they have left the taxpayers on the hook for the billions of dollars of costs resulting from flood after flood after flood…
